Thomas Jefferson 2L Octavia Carson (’20) honored by two bar associations and awarded a $12,000 scholarship!

Congratulations are in order for Octavia Carson, a second-year law student at Thomas Jefferson School of Law who recently was honored by both the Langston Bar Association and the Tom Homann LGBT Law Association (THLA).

Ms. Carson is a second-year law student and the president of the Black Law Student Association at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. She was born and raised in Pontiac, Michigan. She interned with Higgs, Fletcher, and Mack LLP during the summer of 2018 and she recently completed an externship with Magistrate Judge Dembin in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. Both in college and in law school, Ms. Carson has worked on numerous initiatives that seek to uplift people in the LGBTQ community by creating safe spaces for that community, particularly for LGBTQ people experiencing homelessness.

On February 2, 2019, the Langston Bar Association awarded a $12,000 scholarship to Ms. Carson at its Annual Installation and Awards Gala. The John M. Langston Bar Association of Los Angeles strives to empower leadership, advance the professional development of its membership, and promote the administration of justice in the Black community and the community at large. Scholarship recipients were selected based on high academic success, community involvement, and financial need.

Ms. Carson will receive her second scholarship at THLA’s Annual Awards and Installation Dinner, which will take place on Thursday, April 25, 2019. The Tom Homann LGBT Law Association is dedicated to the advancement of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues throughout California and the nation. Ms. Carson was selected as a recipient for this award because of her community involvement and her dedication to LGBTQ issues and equality.
