Turkish Prosecutors and Judges Visit TJSL

September 23, 2014

Turkish prosecutors and judges visiting San Diego lawyers and judges took time out of their busy program to speak to TJSL students on September 22, 2014, at an event sponsored by the Criminal Expungement and Reentry Society, the Criminal Law Society, and the International Law Society.

The event moderator was Sam Bettwy, Adjunct Professor of his course on Comparative Criminal Procedure through Film. The Turkish guests spoke in detail about their career paths and answered many questions about the nature of their jobs. They were also shown clips from the 1978 American film Midnight Express and noted many inaccurate depictions of Turkish legal procedure, which confirmed that students should be wary of American films that depict foreign legal procedure.

The visit was hosted by the San Diego Diplomacy Council and organized by judges of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. “I want to thank Professor William Slomanson for bringing this opportunity to our attention,” said Professor Bettwy.
