TJSL’s Green Wall is Here!

From now on when Thomas Jefferson law students are on the fifth floor outdoor terrace, or look out on the terrace from inside, they won’t see the air conditioning equipment, vents and fans at the building behind the school anymore.

What they will see instead is a beautiful 85-foot “living wall” – made up entirely of succulent plants and arranged artistically.

“Not only is it an urban oasis,” said TJSL’s Dean Rudy Hasl, “but it’s a work of art. Living art.”

The dean not only wanted to use the green wall as a visual buffer between our building and the rooftop equipment of the building next door, but he wanted to “create a contemplative environment for students in the center of the city.”

The wall was designed by Mike Szabo of Nowell and Associates Landscape Architecture and the plants were cultivated by Armstrong Garden Centers. Jim Mumford of GreenScaped Buildings installed the plant panels at TJSL on January 27.  It is the largest green wall of its kind in San Diego.

The wall has a long granite counter-top where students can study and its design “mirrors the metal art in our building’s interior design” that will soon be installed, Dean Hasl added.

With the new TJSL campus expecting Gold Level green building certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and now with the completion of new green wall, Dean Hasl could rightly be called “the Green Dean.”
