TJSL Students Featured in LexisNexis FACTA Book

Associate Dean for Graduate & Distance Education Programs William H. Byrnes’ 2nd Edition of LexisNexis Guide to FATCA Compliance was published on February 3. The 600 + page book of legal analysis features Thomas Jefferson School of Law Alumnus Sean Livermore ’13 as managing editor and Jason Miller (3L) as co-author of a chapter on Turkey.
The guide will provide tools for financial enterprise’s FATCA compliance officers to develop and maintain best practice compliance strategies.
It may also be leveraged in combination with the tools for identification of U.S. indicia of LexisNexis Risk Solutions (http://www.lexisnexis.com/risk/).
Serving as the managing editor was a unique experience for Livermore. “It was a great opportunity to engage with partners of Big Law and the Big 4. Professor Byrnes introduced me to an opportunity to work with an economic and tax study for a foreign government that opened my eyes to various types of tax work, as well as twenty hour work days,” he explained.
“The chance to be featured on LexisNexis fits nicely with my interests in pursuing an international legal career,” said Livermore – who spent several years in Asia studying in Japan and developing curricula for the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education before pursing law school.
Miller co-authored the Turkey chapter with Umurcan Gago, Director of Tax Services for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), whom he interned for last summer in Istanbul.
“It was neat having the resources of PwC to help me write these articles. PwC has someone who specializes in every area, and everyone was always accommodating and eager to help me,” said Miller – who has now published in WoltersKluwer and in three LexisNexis publications.
“Over fifty TJSL students are currently involved in various LexisNexis, Wolters Kluwer, National Underwriter and Mertens publications,” said Dean Byrnes. “Tax Society President Mark Hackman (3L) is a key project leader among the JD students, and Alexis Long the key instructor for the publication course.”
Associate Dean Byrnes continues to find new opportunities for TJSL students. “I undertook over thirty in-house workshops and interviews with tier 1 banks, firms, and government departments,” he explained. “Through these I developed several new contributing authors, including Peter Cotorceanu who is the Head of UBS’ Product Management for Trusts and Foundations, Devang Ambavi, Rajul Jain, and Shinjini Kumar (PricewaterhouseCoopers experts for India), and Jinghua Liu and Qiguang Zhou (Baker McKenzie experts for China).”
“I look forward to having TJSL students engage with these authors for the 2015 Edition, teaching students how to build an international network, and of course about international tax opportunities,” said Dean Brynes.
