TJSL Alumni Volunteer at “Celebration of Champions”
June 7, 2012
Saturday June 2 marked the 7th Annual Rady Childrens Hospital “Celebration of Champions.” It also was the second year in a row TJSL alumni volunteered at this wonderful event!
Our Champions – childhood cancer patients – along with sponsors, family members, and celebrities, perform an Olympic-style relay passing the “Torch of Life” from one to another. There are also other activities throughout the day including a Circle of Life honoring those who have passed on. This dynamic and exciting event both provides an enjoyable outing away from the hospital for the children, and symbolizes their remarkable spirit and determination in fighting this life-threatening disease.
This event celebrates the heroic efforts of children with cancer, and of their families and health care professionals. All donations and sponsorship funds support the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, and its programs providing social, psychological and emotional support and other assistance to the children and their families throughout the course of illness, treatment and recovery.
Many celebrities were running along-side the kids, including former Padres pitcher Trevor Hoffman and many other Padres, Navy SEALs, Olympic athletes, and TV news personalities.
This event is one of several community events that the TJSL Alumni Association Community OutReach Experience (C.O.R.E) Committee participates in.
