Lawyers Club Honors Amy Louttit 3L with Women and the Law Project Scholarship
November 30, 2012
The Lawyers Club of San Diego will honor second-year TJSL student Amy Louttit on Thursday, December 13, as the recipient of this year’s Lawyers Club of San Diego Women and the Law Project Scholarship at Thomas Jefferson School of Law.
Louttit, who will graduate in 2013, will receive a $2,000 scholarship to help with the expense of tuition and books. Louttit joins TJSL alumni Catrina Skor ’11 and Elizabeth Knowles ’12 as recipients of this scholarship award.
Applications for the scholarship were solicited in early October and submitted to the Lawyers Club Scholarship Committee for selection of a candidate to be approved by the Lawyers Club Board of Directors. TJSL had several well-qualified candidates this year.
Louttit’s interest in Lawyers Club was heightened after joining the organization and attending a Life Work Balance Workshop. “I am really honored,” says Louttit. “It’s been a long time coming, knowing that I haven’t really been recognized for all of my accomplishments since so many obstacles popped up in my path. I want to continue to be an inspiration to people to know that no matter how down you are or how many obstacles you face, you can do great things and be recognized for it.”
“I learned of the LC scholarship in an email the school sent out. Knowing the LC the mission, I am the first female from either side of my family to go to law school. I’ve overcome a lot to be here. I’ve had good female role models, especially teachers, who have encouraged me to have the strength and independence to have confidence in myself. I came to California alone at age 17, after leaving a difficult household situation in South Carolina. I graduated from high school a year early, and then went to Humboldt State. I served two years with AmeriCorps and I fell in love with the homeless kids I worked with there. I developed amazing bonds with some special kids.”
Louttit refers to her internship at the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth as “my dream job!” She also serves as the Event Chair for TJSL’s Law Students for Reproductive Justice student organization.
Thomas Jefferson School of Law established this annual scholarship in collaboration with Lawyers Club of San Diego, a non-profit specialty bar association seeking to advance the status of women in the law, to support and improve the administration of justice and to promote equality of women and men in our society. The scholarship is awarded to a TJSL student in good standing who demonstrates support of the mission of Lawyers Club and is academically among the top 50% of his or her law school class.
The scholarship will be officially awarded at the Lawyers Club annual Holiday Luncheon in December. Thomas Jefferson School of Law is a “Benefactor” of Lawyers Club and will have a table at the Lawyers Club Annual Holiday Luncheon, at which Louttit at her guests will sit with other members of the TJSL community.
