Fabulous Friday Starts This Week
September 17, 2012
Fridays are pretty fabulous for most of us, but at TJSL, Fridays are about to get even more fabulous.
That’s because the law school’s new Academic Success Program (ASP) has created a series of events called Fabulous Friday Workshops that will help students, staff and faculty – but especially students – find a healthy balance in their lives.
“It’s not just about academics, but about life balance,” says Leah Christensen, Assistant Dean of Academic Success and Bar Preparation. “We want to support the whole student.”
The first Fabulous Friday Workshop is coming up on Friday, September 21, at 11:30 -12:45 in Room 225. It will introduce techniques such as breathing and meditation to improve memory, de-stress exercises, improving exam performance and managing your emotions. Call it Super-Brain Yoga!
The workshop will be facilitated by health and fitness expert Tammi Moretti, who does similar workshops for the Lawyers Club of San Diego. Moretti’s studies have shown that the legal profession is hungry for skills that will give them more life balance.
“These same skills can help students thrive in law school and create balance within the profession because these skills translate into your practice of law,” says Dean Christensen. “You can be a better, happier lawyer down the road.”
Others can benefit too!
“The Academic Success Program is for everyone, not just for students who may be struggling,” says Dean Christensen, who is very excited about the new programming ASP is offering TJSL students.
The Fabulous Friday program will be held every other week, and is part of a transformation of the Academic Success Program that began with the hiring of TJSL’s new Director of Academic Success Karen Harkins, according to Dean Christensen. “We’re going to do a lot of innovative things!”
Many law students may find that there are precious few times during their busy schedules they can practice the techniques, but according to Dean Christensen, “Ten minutes a day can change your life. And everybody has ten minutes every day.”
Now…take a deep, cleansing breath!
