Associate Dean Aaron Schwabach Speaks at Symposium Hosted by the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland

In June, Associate Dean Aaron Schwabach was invited by the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland to serve as a speaker and panelist at the Patent Office’s annual symposium in Warsaw; this year’s theme was “Intellectual Property in the Digital World.” Following the introductory address, the conference presentations and panels kicked off with Dean Schwabach’s comparative analysis of parody law in the US and the European Union: “Protection of parody in the context of the relevant judgements (Deckmyn v. Vandersteen and Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music).” A panel discussion on the legal boundaries of parody and criticism on the Internet followed, in which Dean Schwabach was joined by Dr. Adrian Niewęgłowski of Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin; Professor Ewa Nowińska of Jagiellonian University in Kraków; Daniel Hasik of the Hasik Rheims & Partners Law Office in Warsaw; and Katarzyna Zajfert of the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

On the following day Dean Schwabach was a panelist on a trademark panel addressing effective protection of Internet domains and trademarks, moderated by Dr. Justyna Ożegalska-Trybalska of Jagiellonian University and joined by Professor Paweł Podrecki, also of Jagiellonian University; Dr. Ireneusz Matusiak, the President of the Arbitration Court for Internet Domains at the Polish Chamber of Information Technology and Telecommunications; and Judge Beata Piwowarska, Head of the 22nd EU Trademarks and Community Designs Division of the Circuit Court in Warsaw.
