Thomas Jefferson School of Law Dean Rudy Hasl has announced that Robert Knowles has accepted an offer to join the law school as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Law for the 2011-2012 academic year.

“I could not be more thrilled to be joining the TJSL community,” Professor Knowles said. “TJSL truly has it all:  a stunning new downtown facility, talented and accomplished faculty, and a culture devoted to teaching and student success,”

Professor Knowles will teach Civil Procedure and a Jessup Moot Court seminar.  He will be taking over the Civil Procedure section taught by Professor Julie Cromer Young, who will be visiting in the fall at Washington and Lee Law School.

Currently, Professor Knowles is a visiting professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he has taught National Security Law, Terrorism and Criminal Justice, and Legal Writing. He also has taught at New York University School of Law. As a human rights advocate, Professor Knowles has vast experience in international law and national security law. His scholarship, which covers topics ranging from U.S. attitudes towards China to detainee policy, is featured in many publications.

Professor Knowles earned his Juris Doctor at Northwestern University School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude and was active on Law Review and Moot Court. He earned his B.A. at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. He also was a law clerk for the Honorable M. Margaret McKeown at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Diego in 2002-2003.

“I’m excited to share my expertise to enrich even further the wealth of opportunities available at TJSL, and to help students hone their appellate advocacy skills,” Professor Knowles said.
