TJSL Student Receives High Honors from Employee Rights Center

The Employee Rights Center honored TJSL law student, Christy Mills, at its Fifth Annual Fall Fundraiser and Award Ceremony on Nov. 10, 2010, for her outstanding service on behalf of low-income workers in San Diego. The Employee Rights Center is a nonprofit law firm dedicated to representing working families with their employment law and immigration needs.

“For over a year, Mills has interned at the Employee Rights Center, appearing at more than 100 administrative hearings to recover unpaid wages and unemployment insurance benefits for her clients,” said Dovie Yoana King, Associate Director of Career Services at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. “She was one of only three individuals recognized for superior service and dedication to workplace justice.”

In addition to appearing before the California Labor Commissioner, Mills said her “focus also has been on expanding the services of the Employee Rights Center to include filing claims on behalf of workers in Superior Court for breach of contract and collection on judgments.”

In addition to Mills’ award, the law school received recognition from Peter Zschiesche, Executive Director of the Employee Rights Center, for its continued support and formal sponsorship of the annual program. Numerous staff, faculty, students and alumni from Thomas Jefferson were in attendance.

Additionally, Professor Susan Bisom-Rapp recently accepted a position on the Employee Right’s Center Advisory Board, lending her expertise on employment and labor law. She is a co-author of The Global Workplace, a path breaking casebook on international labor and employment law.
