LLM Degrees
Thomas Jefferson School of Law offers graduate law programs for foreign and American practicing lawyers, enabling them to expand their knowledge and hone their practice skills. We offer two advanced law degrees, American Legal Studies and Practice Skills.
Our LLM programs are 24 units and typically take one year to complete. Candidates for the LLM program must hold a JD, LLB, or equivalent first degree in law.
LLM In American Legal Studies
The LLM in American Legal Studies is a general degree designed for students who have earned a law degree in another country and seek to either (1) take the California bar exam and become licensed to practice in California; or (2) strengthen their knowledge and understanding of a particular area of law to enhance their practice in their home country.
LLM In Practice Skills
The LLM in Practice Skills is a degree designed to enable students who have graduated from law school to focus on the practice skills—including trial practice, general litigation, law practice management, and alternative dispute resolution—that are essential to successfully enter the practice of law.
Except as provided in rule 4.30 of the Admissions Rules (Legal education in a foreign state or country), completion of a professional law degree program at this law school other than for the Juris Doctor degree does not qualify a student to take the California Bar Examination or satisfy the requirements for admission to practice law in California. It may not qualify a student to take the bar examination or to satisfy requirements for admission to the practice of law in any other jurisdiction. A student intending to seek admission to practice law should contact the admitting authority in the jurisdictions where the student intends to qualify to sit for the bar examination or to be admitted to practice for information regarding their legal education requirements.
